Introduction
When we think about Surveying only few of us know what is actual surveying.
for a general understanding, Surveying is " Collecting high accurate 3 dimensional positional data to improve the spatial(positional) aspect of ordinary data to the enhancement of information in order to assist the decision making process and also to establish positional decisions on the physical dimension"
Professionals who practice the above generally known as SURVEYORS but to become a surveyor there are other educational and legal requirements to be achieved. We will talk about this in another article.
Surveying performed in land basically can categorized as
- Cadastral Surveying
- Construction Surveying
although the final output is different, generally the surveying procedure is pretty much similar. Only difference is the level of accuracy. Cadastral Surveying deals in property boundaries where "cm" level accuracy is sufficient.
"mm" level accuracy is needed in construction surveying, specially in construction of high rise buildings.
Since the method followed is similar we would discuss how to achieve the required mm level accuracy with available technology in Sri Lanka on this series.
For Surveying control network is the most important part. establishing and maintaining it is critical in any project. Different kind of monument or other methods could be used to fix the control points around the project site. Then giving coordinates to those points by running a traverse is the general process.
